According to police reports, seven passengers died on the spot following a head-on collision between a matatu and a lorry. The victims include both men and women, with some believed to be travelling to work in Nairobi. Emergency responders faced the grim task of retrieving bodies from the mangled wreckage.

Two Vehicles Involved

The accident occurred when a 14-seater matatu travelling towards Nairobi collided with an oncoming heavy goods truck near Korompoi trading centre. Witnesses report that one of the vehicles may have been attempting to overtake at high speed before impact.

 6 Survivors in Hospital

Six people were rushed to Kitengela Sub-County Hospital and later transferred to other facilities in Nairobi for specialised treatment. They sustained injuries ranging from broken limbs to head trauma. Doctors say some remain in critical condition.

Police say the crash happened shortly after 5:00 am, when visibility was still low and early commuters were making their way into the city. The Namanga–Nairobi highway is a key transport corridor linking Kenya to Tanzania, and heavy traffic at that hour is common.

Police Call for Caution

Kajiado County Police Commander urged drivers to strictly observe speed limits and avoid dangerous overtaking, especially along the Namanga–Nairobi stretch which has seen multiple fatal accidents this year.

“We continue to lose innocent lives due to reckless driving. Motorists must take personal responsibility to keep our roads safe,” he said.

 Road Safety Under Scrutiny

The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter road safety enforcement. Road safety advocates are urging:

• Regular inspection of public service vehicles (PSVs).

• Stiffer penalties for speeding and reckless driving.

• Installation of more warning signs and road markings in high-risk spots like Korompoi.

Residents of Korompoi and Kitengela have been gathering at the accident site and hospitals to comfort survivors and their families. Leaders have pledged to assist with funeral arrangements for the victims, many of whom were breadwinners.
