Ksh163 Million Cheques Presented to 816 Young Kenyans by President Ruto Under Labour Mobility Initiative
In a landmark event that underscores the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and job creation, President William Ruto has officially handed over cheques totaling Ksh163 million to 816 young Kenyans who successfully secured employment opportunities abroad under the government’s Labour Mobility Programme (LMP). This ceremony, held at the State House in Nairobi, highlights the growing importance of international labour migration as a pathway for Kenya’s youth to earn sustainable livelihoods, acquire new skills, and contribute to the country’s economic development through remittances.
The Labour Mobility Programme is a government initiative aimed at facilitating access to formal jobs in foreign countries for Kenyan youth, especially those struggling to find gainful employment locally. Through strategic partnerships with foreign governments and private employers, the programme seeks to address the perennial problem of youth unemployment by opening doors to overseas job markets in sectors like hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture.
Since its inception, the LMP has gained momentum and support from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and private recruitment agencies accredited by the government. The initiative not only provides jobs but also ensures that Kenyan workers are protected by bilateral labour agreements that guarantee fair treatment, decent working conditions, and adherence to international labour standards.
During the cheque presentation ceremony, President William Ruto praised the young beneficiaries for their determination and resilience in securing international employment. He emphasized that the government’s role is to create an enabling environment where youth can access opportunities beyond Kenya’s borders without falling prey to illegal migration or exploitation by unscrupulous agents.
“Today, we celebrate 816 bright young Kenyans who have shown courage and ambition by seizing opportunities abroad through the Labour Mobility Programme. This government remains committed to supporting our youth to earn a dignified living, both at home and abroad, while contributing to Kenya’s growth through their remittances and skills acquired overseas,” President Ruto said.
He also reiterated the importance of the programme in combating youth unemployment, which remains one of Kenya’s biggest socio-economic challenges. With over 1.5 million young people entering the job market annually, initiatives like the LMP are critical in reducing the pressure on the domestic labour market and curbing illegal migration trends.
The 816 beneficiaries represent a diverse cross-section of Kenya’s youth population, ranging from fresh graduates to skilled artisans and professionals. The majority secured jobs in countries with formal labour agreements with Kenya, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Canada, Australia, and Germany.
Several young recipients shared their excitement and gratitude during the ceremony. Mary Wanjiku, a 26-year-old nurse who secured a job in Canada, said, “This programme has changed my life. The financial support will help me settle in smoothly and focus on delivering quality care to my new community.” Similarly, John Mwangi, a chef headed to the UAE, expressed hope that his international exposure would one day enable him to open his own restaurant back in Kenya.
As Kenya continues to grapple with youth unemployment challenges, initiatives like the LMP provide hope and practical solutions, enabling young people to build brighter futures for themselves and their families while contributing to the country’s development through remittances and skills transfer.
