Tragedy at Daraja Mbili: Multiple Feared Dead After Trailer Accident in Kisii
A tragic road accident has left several people feared dead and many others seriously injured after a trailer truck lost control and rammed into vehicles and pedestrians at Daraja Mbili, a busy trading center along the Kisii–Migori highway.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the trailer truck was descending from Kisii town when it appeared to lose its brakes. It plowed through the morning traffic, crashing into public service vehicles, boda bodas, and roadside traders before finally coming to a halt in a mangled heap of metal and debris.
"We saw it coming fast, honking nonstop... people screamed and ran in all directions," said a vendor who narrowly escaped the impact.
Casualties and Response
As of this morning, emergency responders had confirmed multiple fatalities, though the exact number remains unverified. Scores of injured individuals were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. The Kenya Red Cross and local security personnel were on the ground managing the rescue operations.
The incident has paralyzed transport along the busy Kisii-Migori route, with traffic backed up for kilometers as police worked to clear the wreckage.
Government Statement
Kisii County officials, along with representatives from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), have arrived at the scene. In a brief statement, Kisii County Commissioner expressed condolences to affected families and promised a full investigation into the cause of the brake failure.
Public Reactions
The accident has sparked renewed calls for the inspection of heavy commercial vehicles, especially those plying hilly routes. Residents and local leaders have also urged the government to install truck escape ramps and speed governors in critical downhill sections.
