Kenya Pushes for Full Capacity at Kasarani for CHAN Quarter-Final

Kenya’s football fever is hitting new heights as the Harambee Stars gear up to face Madagascar in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) this Friday. The government has officially asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to allow Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to operate at full capacity for the match.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya says the request is meant to give the national team maximum home support, noting that fans showed discipline during last Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Zambia. For that game, only 27,000 tickets were released, but demand far outstripped supply.

In fact, interest in Kenya’s matches has been so overwhelming that the online ticketing system temporarily crashed earlier this week. The cheapest tickets, priced at Sh250, sold out in hours, leaving many fans stuck in long digital queues without success.

At the same time, CAF slapped the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with a Sh12.5 million fine over security shortcomings during the group stage fixtures against Morocco, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Even with these challenges, Mvurya is optimistic. He has called for patience as CAF and FKF work on fixing the ticketing glitches to ensure more fans can secure seats for the big game.

Friday’s showdown promises to be electric, and if the government’s request is granted, Kasarani could be packed to the rafters—giving Harambee Stars the roaring home advantage they need.
